Hotels Near Trafalgar Square

A popular tourist attraction and venue for political rallies, Trafalgar Square was laid out in 1830 and used to be home to thousands of feral pigeons. In 2005 the mayor of London banned pigeon-food sellers in a bid to counteract potential health hazards in the area. Trafalgar Square itself has many interesting sights including: Nelson’s Column, The National Gallery and the church of St, Martin-in-the-Fields. Trafalgar Square is within walking distance of The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.

At the center of the square is the tall Nelson's Column which was built in 1842 and is approximately 170ft high. On top of the column is an 18ft high statue of Lord Nelson to commemorate the victory of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson over the French fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on the 21st of October 1805. Guarding the column is four huge lions which were added later in 1868.
