The Monument Commemorating a Sad MemoryThe Monument to the Great Fire of London, also known as The Monument is one of the biggest tourist attractions in London. Situated near the London Bridge, the monument 202 feet high was built at a place from where the great fire of London started in 1666. The construction of the Monument started in 1671 and it took 6 years to complete. The monument was built of a large fluted Doric column which was built of Portland stone, and to make the reason-fire- evident the column was topped with a gilded urn of stone. Every face and side has some resemblance with the real incident and its height marks the distance to place-the King's baker shop from where the fire started.
